Having a disability such as Cerebral Palsy, an arthritic hip, and learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a means of self defense is quite daunting. So you can imagine how hard it was to find the “right” school and instructor for me. I had so many questions but at M-Theory Martial Arts under Professor Ishmael Bentley all of my questions and doubts were put to rest. Some of the questions that I asked Professor Bentley prior to joining the school were, “My goal in BJJ is to learn self defense and earn a black belt. As an instructor can you help me achieve this?” Ishmael told me that he teaches BJJ as self defense first and foremost. In addition, his goal for each of his students is always black belt. The second question I posed to Ishmael was, “I have CP and using my legs is tough. Can I still learn BJJ?” Ishmael answered this question for me by saying “Yes, we can modify the techniques so they work for you.” This is how I know I have the “right” BJJ school and instructor.

For nearly a decade Ishmael has been my coach in Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. As a female in these sports, it has been invaluable to have such a talented and supportive coach both ringside and mat side. He is a very patient and devoted teacher and friend. Even as a skillful black belt, Ishmael is continuously learning in order to provide his students with the best training possible. His humble approach has been adopted by his students and has created an atmosphere that is not only competitive but also whole lot of fun. I am excited to continue my journey in martial arts with Ishmael and this great group people at M-Theory.

Joining M-Theory was one of the best things I have ever done for myself and I cannot recommend the place highly enough. I am 45 and very few things in my entire life have had the positive impact on me that Professor Ishmael, the other instructors, and the students at M-Theory have had and I am so very grateful for them. When I started 6 months ago I was very overweight, completely out of shape, in constant back pain (for 10 years), and was generally very unhappy with my life. Since I have joined, I have lost over 40 pounds, I am healthy and I am pain free. I feel 20 years younger and I have a completely different outlook on life. And not to be overlooked, I found something I absolutely love to do. I am hooked and I go to M-Theory every chance I get to practice Jiu Jitsu.
I remember the very first time I walked into M-Theory and I remember thinking, “This place is not a school or a business. It is a family.” There is a closeness and warmth to the people and to the place that is plainly obvious. Professor Ishmael is not only a great teacher but he has also created an environment of support, care, and learning. Every day I am there some other student is offering me help. I can’t imagine a better atmosphere.
